Responsive Website v/s Adaptive Website

The newly appeared Responsive web design has become the most discussed topic among the designers and developers. The reason behind its emergence is the “amazing growth of mobile usage”. Today’s generation is more likely to access the website through their smartphone, tablet, iPhone etc instead of laptop or desktop. The wide use of handheld devices has compelled developers to bring some innovative software and here is the “RWD”.

Now you might be confused between responsive website and adaptive website isn’t? Well let’s discuss the difference between responsive website and adaptive website design but before that here are their exact terms (definition).

Responsive website

Responsive web design is an approach that helps user to have a look of a website on different screen sizes. It quickly responds to the user’s behavior and environment based on the gadget. It is a method comprises flexible grids and layouts, images and an intelligent use of CSS media queries. All these elements automatically switch to accommodate for resolution, image size and scripting abilities as per customer’s use. Now the websites can automatically respond and adapt to any device with any screen size, no matter what the device is iPad, smartphone, mobile, laptop or desktop.

Adaptive website

In adaptive website predefined sizes are required for different layouts and there are three to four break-points are that accommodate desktop, tablet and mobile screen sizes. The information is passed to the server for device’s specs, and a page adapted to that device is returned, it certainly use some of the same JavaScript/CSS techniques as RWD, but the content may be different / smaller.

Difference between Adaptive and Responsive website

The major different between adaptive and responsive website is “size”. In adaptive website, a specific or defined size is required for a particular device or browser whereas the responsive website responds and adapts any screen size or device.
